Karrie’s Story

You never know how STRONG you are, until being STRONG is the only choice you have. I thought I was exactly that when I was diagnosed with very aggressive Breast Cancer at age 37. It came out of nowhere.

At the time, I worked 70 hours a week as a truck driver and was training for a half triathlon. I literally told my doctors,Ā I donā€™t have time for this. I was told, “you better make time, or you will have no time at all.Ā “God said PAUSE, WAKE UP CALL!Ā

This journey has changed my life forever, and ALL those around me. I fight my war with Big Girl pants & HUGE gloves on.Ā So,Ā 3 different surgeries, a double mastectomy (no chance of reconstruction), and 8 total years of treatment later, I am a whole different kind of warrior.Ā I WEAR PINK! My scars are my Battle Wounds! And I wear them with HONOR!

I am especially grateful for all the support TEAMS that helped me get through this, from the Susan G. Komen Foundation to the American Cancer Society and all the counselors, charities, and churches in between. They provided hope, faith, love, food, clothing, transportation, counseling, classes, therapy, prosthetics, etc., and best of allā€”a SMILE.Ā Positivity isĀ everything! I never felt alone and was always given the courage to continue fighting.

My FAITH in GOD, Family, and Kratom has lifted me from the darkest trenches. My HOPE of survival has changed my heart to LIVE and FIGHT for others. My LOVE to all those who supported me through this journey, and always worked diligently to find the best natural solutions, showed me that I gained so muchĀ moreĀ than I lost.

I will NEVER stop fighting because they NEVER stopped fighting for me. Giving up is NOT an option. God Bless all those affected by this terrible disease. I THANK all of you who help with the fight, The Warriors, and everyone who supports them. Cancer Sucks, but NEVER GIVE UP!!Ā

With Great Love,
Karrie J.

Our Personal Connection to Susan G Komen for the Cure

One of the great things about our charity drives at Mitragaia is that they provide us opportunities to give back to charities that have personally helped out members of our team.

This specific charity holds a special place in our hearts because it played a crucial role in helping the recovery of Karrie, a member of the Mitragaia family and a proud breast cancer survivor. Karrie is the daughter and sister of our co-founders Maggie and Dan. She has been with Mitragaia from the very beginning and is an integral part of our team.

Diagnosed at 37 years old, Karrie courageously fought and won her battle with breast cancer.

About Susan G Komen for the Cure

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. KomenĀ® organization and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the worldā€™s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer.

To date, Susan G Komen has invested more than $3.3 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy, and programs in more than 60 countries. These efforts helped reduce deaths from breast cancer by 40 percent between 1989-2016, and wonā€™t stop until their promise is fulfilled.
